A comedy about love in the 90’s – that is the tagline of the 1994 rom-com flick which starred the then famous and younger looking Ben Stiller, Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke. It was the directorial debut for Ben Stiller, so as a film debut of Renee Zellweger. After two decades, the director of this cult film wants to bring it to television.
Ben Stiller is joining with scriptwriter Helen Childress for a TV version of their 1994 cult classic comedy Reality Bites for NBC. Childress was 19 years old and a freshman at USC when she completed the script. When she was writing it, she already had Winona Ryder in mind to play the female lead Lelaina Pierce.
For the TV version, Childress is writing the pilot episode that centers on recent college graduate Lelaina Pierce, the character portrayed by Winona Ryder in the movie, and her struggles in early 1990s Houston. Lelaina will capture the lives of herself and her slacker roommates with a video camera. This is quite interesting since there is so much difference between the teenagers in the 90’s and of today. The gadgets are all cooler, the kids are more hyper and the behaviors are more intense.
Stiller and Childress are executive producing the series along with Stacey Sher, Michael Shamberg, Deborah Liebling and Stuart Cornfeld. No information about who’s going to direct the TV version, or if Ben Stiller is planning to direct the pilot episode. He can play one of the stars though, as the father of Lelaina.
